The middle initial of of Donald G. Murphy, 56, a retired Army colonel, was incorrect in an obituary yesterday.

DONALD L. MURPHY, 56, a retired Army colonel who served on various committees for the Fairfax County School Board, died of cancer July 11 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Col. Murphy, a resident of Annandale, served in the Army for 30 years before his retirement in 1983. An artillery officer, his career included two tours of duty in Vietnam and various postings in the United States, including eight years at the Pentagon.

He held assignments at the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Defense Security Assistance Agency, served on the faculty at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and was an ROTC instructor at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

His decorations included the Legion of Merit and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

A resident of the Washington area since 1971, Col. Murphy was chairman of the 1985-1986 human relations advisory committee for the Fairfax County School Board.

He was a graduate of Roosevelt University in his native Chicago and earned a master's degree in business from Central Michigan University.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Jean Claire Fuller Murphy of Annandale; one daughter, Judith Claire Murphy of Falls Church, and his father, William L. Murphy Sr., and his brother, William L. Murphy Jr., both of Chicago.
