Two Win U-Md. Scholarships

Daniel R. Kuespert, a graduate of Centennial High School in Ellicott City and Sanford Barry Gruenfeld, a graduate of Rockville High School, were awarded scholarships to attend the University of Maryland's College Park campus this fall. Kuespert won the Alma and Joseph Gildenhorn Regents Scholarship and Gruenfeld won the Millard Tydings Regents Scholarship. Both scholarships are worth $6,000 a year for four years to cover tuition, room, board and books.

Kuespert and Gruenfeld are both finalists in the National Merit and Maryland Distinguished Scholarship programs.

Kuespert has been captain of the school chess team, a member of the math team and the National Honor Society since 1984. He also helped manage the student-aid program. He expects to study chemical engineering.

Gruenfeld was editor of the school newspaper and has been a member of the National Honor Society since 1985. He plans to study economics.

The Regents Scholars program, established this year, is designed to encourage top national scholars to pursue their studies and careers in Maryland, thus strengthening the state and its school system.

Kuespert is the son of Edward and Beverly Kuespert and Gruenfeld is the son of Ernest and Ilene Gruenfeld. Duke Scholarship Awarded Maria Acebal, a senior at the Holton-Arms School, won the A.B. Duke scholarship to Duke University which will pay her full tuition for four years.

Acebal was president of Holton's Cum Laude Society and headed the school's student tutoring program. As her four-week senior project, she held an internship with the Maryland House of Delegates. She is the daughter of Juan and Julia Acebal of Potomac. Senior Named Phi Beta Kappa

Clifford Lee Royalty, a senior at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia, was elected into the membership of the Zeta of Virginia chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honorary society, on the basis of superior academic achievement.

Royalty majored in political science and expects to begin law school in the fall. He is a 1982 graduate of Northwood High School in Silver Spring. He is the son of James and Mary Ellen Royalty.
