Four years ago, George Mason's Jenny Boozell started playing tennis as a favor to a friend that was trying to recruit players in his recreation program. "It started to become pretty easy and fun, so I just kept up with it," said Boozell, who last week repeated as Virginia State Group A singles champion with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Fort Chiswell's Patches Johnson.

The victory over Johnson was particularly satisfying, not only because Boozell won her second straight state title, but because she had to overcome an opposing crowd as well.

"It was really nice to beat the local favorite," said Johnson. "They (the fans) all thought that I was going to get killed. When I got out there, I lost the first three games and most of the crowd just left. But then I turned it around and won the next eight games. It was very pleasing."

One hour later, Boozell returned to center court with partner Karen Metzler to defeat Felecia Vaughn and Michelle Fink of Galax, 6-1, 6-1, and win the doubles crown.

Boozell's success at the state tournament included a third title as Geoge Mason defeated Independence, 7-2, to win the team crown.
