TOWN BUDGET -- The town council held a public hearing on Town Manager John Schoberlein's proposed $11.3 million budget for the 1988 fiscal year, which begins July 1. Schoberlein's proposal represents a 3.2 percent, $355,000 increase over this year's budget of $10.97 million, but his proposal would maintain the same real estate tax rate for the town, 32 cents per $100 of assessed property value.
Among the major changes in Schoberlein's budget is a consolidation of the town's zoning and planning departments into a new community development division. Schoberlein wants to add three new positions to the new department. Schoberlein said the consolidation and the additional staff were needed to handle an increasing number of zoning violations.
Other items in the budget include: $150,000 to go toward the addition of a multipurpose room and storage space at the Vienna Community Center;$73,957 for a heavy truck and other equipment to be used for bulk trash pickups and the town's leaf-removal program.
The council, which is considering a reduction in the town tax rate from 32 cents to 31 cents per $100 of assessed property value, is expected to adopt its budget on June 15.
