A woman was killed and two persons were critically injured yesterday when a car jumped the curb and struck them as they stood at a Northeast Washington bus stop, D.C. police reported.

Police said the driver of the car, a diabetic, apparently was having a seizure when the 12:50 p.m. accident occurred. They said the car had been traveling in an erratic manner for about 15 blocks on Benning Road NE before it moved onto the sidewalk near 39th Street.

The woman who died was pinned against a tree, and a second woman was thrown about 30 feet. Police had not identified either last night.

A spokesman at D.C. General Hospital said the second woman was in surgery last night and was in critical condition. The woman who had been pinned against the tree died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

A third victim, Jeff Crawford, 20, of 6000 Druid Place, Suitland, was in surgery and listed in critical condition at the hospital, the spokesman said.

Police said the driver of the car, identified as Charles Samuels, 61, of 1119 Sixth St. NE, was taken to Greater Southeast Community Hospital, where he remained in the emergency room under observation last night, a hospital spokeswoman said. He had no visible injuries and was undergoing tests, she said.

Police said last night that no charges had been filed.

Allen Durham, manager of Dave's Poultry Market, said he was in the back of the store at 3911 Benning Rd. NE when he heard a loud noise like a "tin tub falling." He said he ran up the street to the accident site, where he saw a woman's mangled body next to a tree.

"I couldn't stand the scene of it. I came right back in," he said.

Durham, 63, said he called the 911 emergency number, then rushed back to the accident site, where bystanders were screaming as paramedics carried away the injured. "It was a terrible scene. I don't want to experience another one," he said. "Things like that shock you."

A Metro spokeswoman said the bus stop serves the X-2 and X-4 bus routes to the Capitol Heights and Minnesota Avenue Metrorail stops, and the U-6 and U-4 routes to Capitol View and Sheriff Road NE.
