The commissioners said they support the application under the following conditions: Safeway employes be encouraged to park in the Safeway lot rather than on Morrison Street NW; Safeway officials be stricter in prohibiting Maryland residents from parking their cars on the lot while they commute to downtown D.C.; trees at least six feet tall be planted along the southern border of the parking lot at Morrison Street; and that the lot be be made inaccessible from Morrison Street.

Commissioners also had a lengthy discussion about how to control speeding traffic in the Chevy Chase area. It was suggested that the ANC form a committee of residents and traffic experts to develop a plan to control speeding, and that the commission ask the D.C. police to increase the number of officers patrolling the area.

The Eastern Market Neighborhood Commission, which was appointed by D.C. Mayor Marion Barry Jr. to recommend ways to preserve and develop the historic farmer's market, released its report to the mayor June 30.

"We hope that with all the community participation in the commission that we've addressed all the concerns about the market that have come up in the past," said ANC Commissioner Karen Walker, who represented ANC 6B on the Eastern Market commission.

Eastern Market, which was built 117 years ago and is located on Seventh Street between North Carolina Avenue and C Street SE, is in ANC 6B. Two other city-appointed committees have studied the market and recommended renovations in the last six years.

Last May, an 11-member committee recommended a $3.8 million facelift for the run-down farmer's market, including building a mezzanine level in the one-story market and tripling the number of food vendors.
