Local Bicyclist Drops Out of Race
District resident Nelson Freck dropped out of the 3,117-mile McDonald's Race Across America during the third day of the race on June 23 after suffering from dehydration. Freck had pedaled 813 miles to Utah.
"It's just one of those things that sneaks up on you," said Freck, who owns Chaos Unlimited, a bookstore in Northwest. "I'm trying to analyze what happened, but I should have eaten more."
At the end of this month, Freck will compete in a 600-mile race that will serve as a qualifier for next year's Race Across America. "I'm starting the whole process all over again," Freck said.
This year's race started in San Francisco and ended at the Washington Monument.
School Board Candidates
Persons interested in running in the Nov. 3 election for D.C. Board of Education seats in Wards 1, 4, 5, 6 or 7, or for one at-large position, must file nomination petitions by Aug. 26.
To appear on the ballot, a candidate must submit the signatures of at least 200 registered voters within the appropriate ward. The at-large candidates must file at least 1,000 voter signatures from around the city. The Board of Education seats are nonpartisan, and no political affiliation is necessary for candidates.
Along with the school board positions, the 1987 general election will decide initiatives for school funding and for requiring vendors to use returnable beverage bottles.
Starting with this election, the Board of Election and Ethics will use a new boundary between Precincts 11 and 12 in Ward 3, and will establish new precincts by splitting Precinct 50 in Ward 3, Precinct 71 in Ward 5 and Precinct 112 in Ward 6.
All registered voters in the affected areas will be notifed by mail of the changes, which are meant to ease crowding at some polling places.
