A Riverdale Hills woman who stabbed herself nearly three dozen times on Wednesday and finally was shot in a bizarre confrontation with police died from the multiple stab wounds and PCP intoxication, Prince George's County police said yesterday.

Sharon Denise Araoye, 26, of 6239 64th Ave., suffered 20 serious and 15 superficial stab wounds during the incident, according to autopsy results released yesterday, said Cpl. Bruce Gentile, a police spokesman. One of the self-inflicted wounds severed the main vessel that supplies blood to the intestines, he said.

A headline in yesterday's editions incorrectly stated that Araoye was shot to death by police.

Cpl. Wayne McBride fired three shots at Araoye after she ignored his orders to drop the butcher's knife she used to stab herself. One bullet struck Araoye in the right hip and one other hit her in the left leg, according to Dr. Dennis Smyth, who performed the autopsy.

Police had gone to the Parkview Gardens apartments Wednesday morning for a report of a fight in a building at 6239 64th Ave. When McBride arrived he found Bobby Gregory, 29, outside of Araoye's apartment bloodied and leaning against a car.

Gregory, of 3200 Hannon St., Hyattsville, had been stabbed several times by Araoye, police said. Gregory was in stable condition yesterday at the Prince George's Hospital Center.

Gregory told police that Araoye had been smoking "loveboat," the street name for marijuana sprayed with liquid PCP, a hallucinogen.
