Three persons, including a Hagerstown man, were killed in two unrelated early morning accidents yesterday in Maryland, state police reported.

Police said Roy Geary, 66, of Hagerstown was killed about 7:50 a.m. on U.S. Rte. 40 in Washington County when his car veered into an oncoming dump truck.

Police said Geary was driving east on Rte. 40 near Beaver Creek Road when he crossed the center line into the path of the truck. The truck driver swerved onto the shoulder of the road, but the car struck the left side of the truck and spun around. Police said that Geary was killed instantly and that the truck driver was not injured.

In the second accident, two Akron, Ohio, residents were killed and an Upper Marlboro woman critically injured in a head-on collision on the Eastern Shore.

Police said a car driven by Carol C. Smith, 30, of Upper Marlboro crossed the center line of Rte. 404 about 6:20 a.m. and went into the path of a car driven by Ernest E. Hider, 61, of Akron.

Two of Hider's passengers, Carmella Hider, 61, and Robert Schradar, 48, were killed; Ernest Hider and three passengers received minor injuries. They were taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, police said.

Smith, who was alone in her car, was flown in critical condition to the University of Maryland Shock-Trauma Center in Baltimore.
