ANC 6B held an emergency executive meeting on July 14 and voted not to support two applications to the D.C. Historic Preservation Review Board by Drew Scallon to demolish nine buildings and construct a five-story office and retail development in their place on the north side of the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE in the Capitol Hill historic district.
The next day, the Historic Preservation Review Board voted to deny the applications. Scallon also proposed building a two-level underground garage that would have required demolishing an historic house at 1221 E St. SE.
The commissioners said that while they favor economic development in the area, several of the buildings that were proposed to be demolished are more than 100 years old and should be preserved. The commissioners also said they opposed the project because the proposed underground garage entrance would have been across the street from a school playground.
