Northeast Neighborhood Recycling Center Pays for Trash on Tuesdays and Thursdays
The District's Litter and Solid Waste Reduction Commission has established a recycling center at 1341 Maryland Ave. NE.
The center, which operates Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 7 p.m., currently pays two cents per pound of glass, 25 cents per pound of aluminum cans and 50 cents per 100 pounds of paper.
"We are a walk-in recycling center. We're in a residential area," said Freddi E. Moody, the commission's executive director. "We don't have heavy or large trucks coming in."
Moody said that the commission has a partnership with AJ Recycling, which hauls the materials to recycling plants at no cost to the city.
Since its July 18 opening, the center has accepted about 6,000 pounds of glass, 3,500 pounds of cans and 8,500 pounds of paper, she said.
Moody said that the center requires that glass be separated by color, and prefers to receive it rid of labels and lids. But, she said, "When kids come in with their cans and bottles, you can't turn them away." For more information, call 396-9501.
