A 30-year-old Silver Spring man was charged yesterday with the stabbing death of an 11-year-old Southeast boy and the wounding of the boy's mother.
Willie Baskerville, 30, of 14721 Blanton Rd. was arraigned in D.C. Superior Court on charges of felony murder and assault with intent to kill. A court official said he was being held last night in the D.C. Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
Baskerville is accused of killing Christopher Powell and stabbing the boy's mother, Dorothy Powell, during an argument late Tuesday or early Wednesday at the Powells' apartment, 2905 Fairlawn Ave. SE. Powell remains in fair condition at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, where she underwent surgery for two stab wounds in her back and one in her neck.
Police and hospital officials said Wednesday that Powell had been driven around for as long as 13 hours Tuesday night by her assailant, who promised to take her to the hospital. The child's body was found about 2 p.m. Wednesday, after Powell told authorities that her son had been left behind in the apartment. Authorities said she apparently was unaware her son had been stabbed.
