A 15-year-old District girl was killed and five teen-agers injured yesterday in a fiery one-car accident on Rte. 4 near Forrestville that occurred when the driver apparently fell asleep, Prince George's County police said.
Leauntine Jewel Freeman of 2337 25th St. SE was pronounced dead at Washington Hospital Center's MedStar unit just after 6 p.m. yesterday, police said.
The accident occurred about 2:30 a.m. yesterday on northbound Rte. 4 between Silver Hill Road and Brooks Drive, police said. Police said that after the driver of the car, identified as 17-year-old Elliott Austin, apparently fell asleep, the car ran off the right side of the road and caught fire.
Police said a witness from a nearby apartment building ran outside and began removing the injured teens from the car. Soon a police officer arrived at the scene and helped the unidentified witness remove the teens moments before the car exploded, police said.
Austin was treated and released from Greater Southeast Community Hospital, as were 16-year-old Jay Goodman and 15-year-old Leshawan Sheridan. John Bowman, 17, was in stable condition at MedStar, and 17-year-old Derrick Chase was in serious condition there, police said. All are from the District, except Sheridan, who is from Forrestville, police said.
