Cash and personal checks only. Free parking in lot across the street. No bar. Soups are $2 for a 12-ounce bowl. Stews are $3.50 for a small bowl with rice and salad. Chili is $3.50 a portion.

Specialties include vegetable, split pea, bean, cream of potato and cream of broccoli soups, as well as miso broth, homemade chili and a daily selection of stews and curries. Indian food is featured on Tuesday. Organic produce and spring water are used in all dishes. Dunk homemade buttermilk biscuits or Women's Community bakery bread in your soup.

Jake's on the Pike, 1300 Rockville Pike, Rockville. 770-2650. Hours: 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Cards: AE, MC, V. Free parking. Full bar. Soup prices range from $1.95 to $3.95. Specialties are homemade chili, New England clam chowder and a daily soup special.

Specialties include watercress soup, St. Cloud soup (potatoes, peas and chopped onion coated with butter), St. Germain soup (dry peas with potatoes, onion and bacon blended together in a veal broth), french onion soup, cracy soup (carrots in a veal broth), lobster bisque, Dubarry soup (cauliflower and cerfeuil in a white veal broth), conde soup (similar to an American black bean soup), potash flamande (made with petit peas and brussels sprouts in a veal broth).

Siddhartha Indian Vegetarian Restaurant, 908 Thayer Ave., Silver Spring. 585-0550. Hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Cards: None. Cash, personal or traveler's checks only. Free parking after 6 p.m. weekdays, Saturday and Sunday behind restaurant. No bar. Soup is $1.50. Lentil soup with vegetables, daily soup on the buffet menu. All soups are served with papad (a crispy tortilla-like appetizer).

Specialties: seafood stews, including jumbalaya, shrimp creole and Maryland spicy crab. Hearty soups include potato, cream of broccoli, peasant cabbage (potatoes, navy beans, cabbage, kielbasa, onions, turnips, celery and ham), french onion, split pea with ham and grated carrots, Canadian split pea with yellow peas and bacon, black bean and rice with sausage, and spicy lentil soups.
