H.D. Woodson's undefeated Diane Hughes has been one of the biggest surprises of the Interhigh League's cross country season.

Hughes ran her best race of the season last week in winning the Interhigh East Division title at Fort Dupont Park with a time of 17:00 for 2.1 miles. She held off Ballou's Menuel Jones at the tape.

"She has a lot of hidden talent," said H.D. Woodson Coach Lionell Russell. "She is slowly but surely progressing from week to week."

Hughes' best time this season, 14:37, came at the Wilson Invitational on a flat surface at Fort Reno Park.

"She has run good times on both flat and hilly courses," said Russell. "Basically, I think she does better on hilly courses. She is learning to use the hills to her advantage."

Hughes must fight off good runners from both Ballou and Wilson if she is going to win the overall Interhigh championship this week.

Russell is pleased with Hughes' work in the classroom. She is enrolled in the business and finance program at H.D. Woodson, one of the special courses offered at the school, where she is maintaining a 3.2 grade-point average.
