Volunteers are needed for Operation Food, a joint effort by Alexandria human service agencies to feed the needy all year long.
A Thanksgiving food collection will culminate in the delivery of baskets to about 1,000 needy Alexandrians and a Thanksgiving Day dinner for more than 350 people at Hopkins House, a settlement house at 1224 Princess St.
Volunteers are needed to spearhead the food collection campaigns at nine Giant and Safeway stores in Alexandria on Nov. 14-15 and Nov. 21-22 by handing out fliers that describe the project's goals and list needed foods. Volunteers also are needed for two-hour shifts between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays and between noon and 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Volunteers, especially those with pickup trucks, also are needed to pick up the food throughout the campaign.
Volunteers are needed to sort and bag food from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Red Cross, 401 Duke St.
During Thanksgiving week, volunteers are needed to deliver food baskets to needy families.
On Nov. 25, volunteers are needed to help Hopkins House prepare their annual Thanksgiving dinner. About 35 volunteers will be needed for two- or three-hour shifts on Thanksgiving Day to set up the dinner, prepare individual dinners for delivery to shut-ins, serve the dinner and clean up afterwards. Volunteers are needed at various times depending upon the job, with the first shift starting at 10 a.m.
Contributions to help buy fresh food may be sent to Operation Food, P.O. Box 20930, Alexandria, Va. 22313. Checks should be made out to Operation Food.
