Spingarn has had some good middle distant runners in the past and Kevin McKinley has learned something from each of them. That knowledge helped him become the top boys runner in the Interhigh League this season.
McKinley pulled away from Gideon Tinch of H.D. Woodson after 1 1/2 miles last week at Fort Dupont Park and won the league title in 17:45 over 3.1 miles.
For his effort, McKinley earned most valuable performer honors for the season. McKinley also won the league's East Division title at the East-West meet at Fort Dupont two weeks ago.
"Kevin did what was expected of him," said Coach Bruce Williams. "He's a very good half-miler and his half-mile leg speed carried him through the last part of the race.
"We feel that he had a decent season, but he wasn't in top shape until the very end. We are going to work to help him keep up his performance."
Williams will experiment with McKinley during the upcoming indoor season, running him in everything from the 600 to the 3,200 meters.
"I expect him to have a good indoor and outdoor season. Right now, he's right where he has to be," Williams said.
