Virginians Honored for CPR Use
The Northern Virginia Council of the American Heart Association recently recognized Virginians who performed emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the last year.
Among those honored were: Stuart and Gloria Altenhaus, Larry and Jean Harding, Jim Beach, Don Erikson and Marshall Martin of Centreville; Arden B. Schell and Terry Bowers of McLean; Jonelle Schmolder and Darlene Ramey of Springfield; Robin Vogel and Katie Crouch of Fairfax; Chris Eanes and Lee Holt of Burke; Laura Gordon and Tom Brown of Annandale; Donald A. Nichols of Manassas; Julia L. Menges of Gainesville; Ernest Smith of Vienna; Mark Eastman of Reston, and Sam Yoder of Nokesville.
Fairfax Official on Committee
Walter D. Webdale of Fairfax has been appointed as a member of the Community and Economic Development Steering Committee of the National Association of Counties. Webdale is the director of the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development.
The National Association of Counties has 12 steering committees, each composed of 50 to 60 county officials who meet to determine legislative goals concerning local issues.
Their recommendations make up the national group's American County Platform, which is the basis of its lobbying efforts.
Health Council Chairman Named
Mel Bergheim of Alexandria has been named chairman of the Metropolitan Washington Area Council of Health Planning Agencies. Bergheim, former Alexandria City Council member and vice mayor, was the chairman of the Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia and is now its treasurer.
The Council of Health Planning Agencies is a planning organization established by the D.C. State Health Planning and Development Agency, the Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia, the Montgomery County Health Planning Commission, and the Health Systems Agency of Southern Maryland.
Fire Chief on COG Panel
City of Fairfax Fire Chief Harold E. Dailey has been elected chairman of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Fire Chief Technical Committee. A number of subcommittees report to the Technical Committee chairman. These subcommittees deal with fire communication, emergency medical services, fire prevention, Metrorail fire safety issues, fire safety public education, hazardous materials, and line support services. Dailey's term as chairman covers the coming year.
Vienna Essayist Published
An essay by Jennifer Eagan of Vienna has been published in the 1987 edition of Susquehanna University's "The Apprentice Writer," a collection of poetry, fiction, artwork and photography by high school students. Eagan, a graduate of James Madison High School, is one of 82 students from nine states and the District of Columbia whose work was selected from more than 4,000 entries for the 1987 edition. Her essay is titled "Hospice."
