The Salvation Army needs volunteers to help with its holiday projects of providing emergency food supplies for families, dinner for the homeless and hungry on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, a mobile canteen that serves hot lunches in a low income neighborhood every weekday, a Christmas toy shop for underprivileged children, and a holiday gift program to provide children with winter clothing.

Immediate help is needed to dress dolls for the toys for children project. The Salvation Army Community Center will supply the dolls, and material if necessary, and volunteers are needed to make the clothing by the end of November or early December.

Volunteer bell ringers are needed two hours per week during the holiday season to staff the Christmas Kettles at shopping centers. The kettles are the Salvation Army's chief fundraising source.

Volunteer drivers also are needed for the mobile canteen between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. each weekday. No special licensing is required and the Salvation Army's insurance will cover the volunteer drivers.

And, volunteers are needed to work two-hour shifts in November on Operation Food, a joint project involving Alexandria human service agencies. Volunteers will collect food for Thanksgiving dinners and will stock pantries that provide emergency food supplies for families throughout the year.

Volunteers for the Angel Tree project are needed to work two-hour shifts between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. between Nov. 27 and Dec. 19 at Springfield Mall, collecting clothing for children.
