Three people were shot in a Northwest Washington pizza restaurant last night by three men who chased one of them into the restaurant, fired on him with automatic weapons, and accidentally hit two women who were ordering food, police said.

The shooting occurred at 6:45 p.m. inside Lucky's Pizza, 802 N St. NW, and apparently stemmed from an argument over drugs, police sources said.

David Belton, 28, of the 1300 block of R Street NW was listed in stable condition at Washington Hospital Center with three gunshot wounds, a hospital spokesman said.

Two women who were hit by stray bullets were reported in stable condition at Howard University Hospital. Karen Nicholson, 30, of the 400 block of Florida Avenue NW was wounded in the foot, and Gwendolyn Gray of the 400 block of Evarts Street NE was shot in the face, police said.

Belton was chased into the restaurant by three unidentified men after the four of them had argued nearby, according to police. The men apparently started firing just as Belton ran in the restaurant, and then turned and fled. Witnesses said the men ran up Ninth Street and were briefly chased by another man. Police said they have no suspects in the shooting.

Bidu Salami, the restaurant's manager, said she was returning from a delivery when she saw the men run past her car. "I saw them go inside, then right away I heard, 'bop, bop, bop,' " she said. "Then they ran out and took off."

Salami said the restaurant, which she said opened about two months ago, had only a few customers picking up food and playing video games when the shooting occurred.

Police sources said the streets bordering the restaurant serve as busy drug markets at night.
