Doctor Gets Service Award

Dr. Barrie Cook of Fairfax City recently was presented the Community Service Award by the Medical Society of Virginia. Cook has been active with the Boy Scouts and the American Cancer Society, and helped establish a scholarship for the performing arts at George Mason University. He also has hosted 19 foreign exchange students during the years as part of a Rotary foreign student exchange program.

NVCC Board Gets Chairwoman

Nancy M. Perry of Falls Church has been elected chairwoman of the Northern Virginia Community College Board. Perry, a civic activist, has lived in Falls Church since 1964. She has been a member of the NVCC board since 1982. NVCC also has announced that Lillie M. Chandler of Reston is the 1987-88 recipient of the Leslie V. Forte Scholarship for outstanding minority students. Chandler supports herself and her children while studying nursing.

Student Wins Essay Prize

Ninth-grade student Laryn Micaela Smith of Centreville recently was awarded the Overall National Prize in the Fleet Reserve Association's National Essay Contest for her essay "What the Constitution Means to Me."

Club Names Honorees

The Arlington Inter-Service Club Council named its 1987 Woman- and Man-of-the-Year this month. Nan Owen Manning of the Arlington Ki-Wives and John Beale Sadtler were chosen from the members of the 23 clubs that belong to the council. Manning, recently retired from the Arlington School System after many years, volunteers for the Pupil Personnel Department. She is the founder and president of the Arlington County Scholarship Fund for Teachers Inc. Sadtler is the director of the Sheltered Occupational Center in Arlington, and serves as a volunteer with the Telecommunications Exchange for the Deaf Inc.
