Walk Rally Winners

The following were winners in the first walk rally Nov. 7 at Oronoco Bay Park in Alexandria, sponsored by the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities and the Alexandria Police Department: Bonnie R. Knenlein, first place; Kathleen O'Malley, second place, and Margaret Kral, third place.

In the group/team category, Mark Conoyer, Rebecca Conoyer, Lisa Reisner and Roland Droitsch, first place; Cathy Hurrin and Linda Stavrou, second place, and Linda Schatz and Karen Higg, third place. Participants had to complete the 4- to 5-mile course in 2 1/2 hours, answer questions about the route though the city and decode a mystery word ("health") from clues given during the walk. Winners were given gift certificates donated by the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities and the Fairfax Running Center.

New Animal Shelter Director

William Thomas Gregory was recently appointed director of the Alexandria Animal Shelter by Acting Police Chief Arlen Justice. Gregory, who will be paid $24,688 in his new post, was in charge of the Fort Myer Veterinary Service Animal Clinic before assuming his new post and also had worked in the Walter Reed Medical Center Veterinary Services. During the past year Gregory worked parttime as night service officer handling nighttime emergencies for Alexandria's shelter under an arrangement with the nonprofit Alexandria Animal Welfare League.
