RICHMOND, DEC. 3 -- Three persons were killed today when fire swept through a house trailer on the city's south side, fire officials said.

A fourth person who was awakened by smoke inside the trailer escaped unharmed, according to H.J. Beavers, a Richmond fire marshal.

Beavers said firefighters were called to a trailer park on Hull Street Road at 9:38 a.m., and when they arrived, "they found the house trailer fully involved in fire. They were told that there were probably some people inside."

Flames prevented firefighters from immediately entering the trailer, Beavers said, "and when they did gain access, they {found} the bodies of two children and one adult in the living room area."

Richmond police Maj. Stuart Cooke identified the dead as Tina Burkhead, 19; Russell Burkhead, 5; and Christopher Burkhead, 2. Their bodies were sent to the state medical examiner's office for autopsies.

A woman who was sleeping in a back bedroom was able to crawl out a window to safety, Beavers said.

The woman told investigators she was sleeping when the fire broke out, and was unable to provide authorities with any details about what may have caused the blaze, Beavers said.
