Volunteers are needed to help operate a shelter for the homeless that opened Dec. 1.
Meade Shelter at 322 N. Alfred St. is operated by Meade Memorial Episcopal Church and will house about 35 men from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven days a week.
Volunteers are needed from 5 to 9 p.m. to to pick up the homeless by van, put up cots, interview the men to find out their needs and refer the men elsewhere when the shelter is closed.
The vans will be provided by three churches. Drivers will be covered by the church's insurance policy.
Volunteers also are needed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to help staff the shelter during the night, and they are needed from 6 to 8 a.m. daily to take down the cots, help serve a cold breakfast and drop off and pick up laundry.

The Visiting Nurse Association of Northern Virginia, a home health care agency, needs volunteers to fill and deliver holiday baskets to homebound persons next week.
Beginning Monday, shoppers will be needed to buy food with money supplied by the association, and on Saturday, Dec. 19, volunteers will pack the food baskets. Drivers will then be needed to deliver the baskets, using their own cars.
The Alexandria Division of Social Services also needs volunteers to deliver boxes of nonperishable foods to needy families from Dec. 21 through Dec. 24. Drivers must use their own vehicles.
