The winter sports action is going full bore as area teams moved into district play. Local basketball fans were treated to several outstanding performances and Courtland and Woodbridge posted gymnastic vistories. Broad Run looks to be the top Northwestern District wrestling team.

Boys Basketball

Gar-Field rebounded from a seven-point halftime deficit to overtake visiting Stonewall Jackson, 82-77, in a key early season matchup between two of the favored teams in the Commonwealth District race. The Indians received 20 points apiece from center Kenny Scroggins and guard Skip Saunders. Saunders, a 5-foot-6 sophomore, connected on four three-pointers.

Elsewhere in the Commonwealth, North Stafford's Eric Menke scored a game-high 29 points, but it wasn't enough as the Wolverines fel to Osbourn Park, 79-70. Robert Jackson had 26 for the vistorious Yellow Jackets.

In the Northwestern District, Chris Leonard pumped in 30 points, including three three-pointers, to power Loudoun Valley past Broad Run, 79-71, at Broad Run. Chip Garczynski had 25 for the losers.

Gymnastics

Courtland, one of the Commonwealth District favorites, held off North Stafford, 100.4 to 97.1. Strong performances by Senior Alison Peck (all-around medalist) and Sophomore Jill Chapman (tied for fourth in the all-around) led the way for the Cougars. North Stafford was led by sophomore Midy Berg and freshman Tanya Dean, who finished second and third in the all-around competition and took first in one event each.

Despite a fine all-around performance by Christi Mehlhorne of Osbourn Park, a deeper Woodbridge team posted a win in last week's quad meet with Stonewall Jackson, Potomac and Osbourn Park. Mehlhorne finished first in all fourt events, but the Vikings, behind Marci Anzelmo and Cindy Short, scored 90.2 points, three more than second place Potomac. Osburn Park finished third with 85.95 and Stonewall Jackson was fourth with 84.5.

Wrestling

Broad Run defeated Loudoun County 54-16 to run its record to 6-1. Spartans James Lucas (unlimited), Kenny Parsons (155), Dylan Lawler (167) and Doug Esquerra (126) are undefeated on the season.
