The following is a list of holiday closings and schedule changes for the metropolitan area Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Federal offices-Open Dec. 31; closed Jan. 1.

Mail-Post offices closed Jan. 1, with express mail and special delivery only.

TRANSPORTATION

Metrorail- Dec. 31, 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. the following day; Jan. 1, 10 a.m. to midnight.-

Metrobus-Dec. 31, regular weekday schedule; Jan. 1, Sunday schedule. Montgomery County Ride-On-Dec. 31, regular weekday schedule; Jan. 1, Sunday schedule.

Maryland Rail Commuter-Dec. 31, regular weekday schedule; Jan. 1, will not operate.

Alexandria Transit DASH-Dec. 31, regular weekday schedule; Jan. 1, will not operate.

Fairfax Connector Buses-Dec. 31, regular weekday schedule; Jan. 1, will not operate.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Banks- Most banks open Dec. 31; closed Jan. 1.

Courts-U.S. District Court in recess through Jan. 3; D.C. Court of Appeals and D.C. Superior Court open Dec. 31 and closed Jan. 1.

D.C. government-Open Dec. 31; closed Jan. 1.

Schools- Closed through Jan. 1.

Libraries- Open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 31; closed Jan 1.

Traffic, parking-Weekday traffic and parking regulations Dec. 31; holiday traffic regulations, with no meter fees Jan. 1.

Trash- Regular trash collection Dec. 31. Trash pickup for Jan. 1. will be Jan. 2.

MARYLAND-

Courts-Closed Jan. 1 in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's and St. Mary's counties.

Trash-No trash pickups Jan. 1 in Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties. Municipalities vary. Landfills closed Jan. 1, except in Calvert County.

Traffic, parking-Weekday regulations Dec. 31. No HOV restrictions on I-66 or I-395 express lanes Jan. 1. Holiday parking regulations in effect Jan. 1 in Arlington County and Alexandria.

Trash- Arlington pickups scheduled for Jan. 1 will be one day early. Regular trash collection schedule in Fairfax County.
