Tree Collection Slated
Montgomery County's annual Christmas tree collection will be conducted Jan. 9. Residents may drop off their trees that Saturday at the parking lot of any public elementary school currently used.
The county asks that any plastic bags, nails or screws be removed from the trees.
County Phone Changes
The Montgomery County government is upgrading its phone system and changing the prefix number for many of the offices. Telephone numbers with a 251 exchange were to have been converted to 217 on Monday, county officials reported. Most offices will keep the same last four digits. Other numbers, including the 279 exchange, will be changed in March.
The changes are being made as the county replaces telephone equipment that it now leases with a system that it will own. The conversion and upgrading of the system is expected to save about $1.1 million annually, said Gregg Obuch, chief of telecommunications.
The county is sponsoring six free workshops next month to help property owners understand the assessment and appeal process. Among the items that will be discussed is the procedure for filing an appeal if residents believe the state department of assessments and taxation has placed too high a value on their property. For more information or to register for the workshops, call 279-1274.
