St. John C.M.E.'s Man of the Year

Samuel L. Ficklin was named Man of the Year for 1987 by St. John C.M.E. Church, 2801 Stanton Rd. SE. Ficklin also received a Certificate of Appreciation plaque and a monetary gift last month for his 26 years of service as chairman of the church's steward board.

General Appointed to D.C. National Guard Post

Brig. Gen. Erneido A. Oliva was recently appointed by President Reagan to the post of Deputy Commanding General (Army) of the District of Columbia National Guard. Oliva's previous command was the 260th Military Police Brigade of the DCNG. As a civilian , Oliva serves as a special assistant to the commissioner for the D.C. Commission on Social Services.

D.C. Latino Commission Chief Chosen

Pedro Aviles, a native of El Salvador, was elected chairman of the D.C. Commission on Latino Community Development during its annual election of officers last week.

The commission advises the mayor, the D.C. Council and the city's Latino Affairs office on the views and needs of the Latino community in Washington.

A member of the commission since 1984, Aviles is project director of Latin American Youth Center's Latino Youth Action Project/Arts and Humanities.

Ellen Bozman Elected COG Chief

Ellen M. Bozman was elected to head the board of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments last week.

Bozman served as vice chairman of the board since 1985 and is vice chairman of the Arlington County Board, of which she has been a member since 1974.
