North Stafford rebounded from a poor showing in the Northwestern Region Meet to win the AAA title, while Park View won the AA title.

AAA State Meet: North Stafford won the meet over Northern Region powerhouses West Springfield and Lake Braddock in the school's first appearance in the state meet. The Wolverines surprised the dominant teams earlier in the season with victories in both the Lake Braddock North/South Meet and the Park View Invitational.

Despite a poor individual showing in the Northwestern Region Meet -- no one on the North Stafford team qualified for the state all-around competition -- the young North Stafford squad held on to a slight lead last weekend at Frank Cox High School in Virginia Beach to win the meet with a school record 107.65 points. West Springfield, last year's runnerup, scored 107.30 and two-time defending state champion Lake Braddock was third with 106.65. Courtland, who lost its first district and regional meets in five years to North Stafford earlier this month, was fourth with 104.5 points.

''We had a bad regional meet but I knew that my kids could hang with the top kids in the state,'' said North Stafford Coach Wendy Payne. ''I knew we could finish in the top three. We knew that Lake Braddock and West Springfield would be our toughest competition.''

Angie Sullivan was the top Northwestern Region finisher, placing fourth in the all-around with 34.75 points. North Stafford's Teri Fleming had the best individual performance for the Wolverine's as she tied with West Springfield's Leigh Ullman for the second place position on the beam with 9.15 points and shared fifth place on the bars with Menchville's Diana Vaughan with 8.85.

AA State Meet: Park View won its third state title with an all-time high score of 105.05. The Patriots have had an outstanding season with victories in every dual meet. They even finished ahead of defending Virginia AAA state champion Lake Braddock in the Park View Invitational, in which they paced the AA competition in fourth place.

After winning a tenth Region B title a week before, Park View's victory in the state meet was not surprising.

''We knew we would do well but we never expected to score {so high},'' said Park View assistant Coach Judy Miller.

Broad Run was second with 98.9. The Patriots' Leah Terrell and Christie McDonald finished first and second respectively in all-around. Terrill (34.3 points) was second to McDonald (34.2) in the Region II Meet a week earlier. Teammate Theresa Cummings won the floor title with 9.1 points.McDonald was second in that event (9.0) and Terrell was third (8.75).
