The Gar-Field and Loudoun Valley boys team won district tournaments and the Woodbridge girls grabbed a title as regular season champions continued their dominance in area playoffs.
Commonwealth District: The Gar-Field boys and Woodbridge girls won twice to claim Commonwealth District Tournament championships.
The Gar-Field boys defeated Potomac, 82-66, for the championship. The teams met a week earlier to decide the regular season champion and Gar-Field claimed the title with a 72-70 victory. In the tournament, the Indians had an easier time as Keith Alvarez scored 24 points and Jamel Perkins added 19.
Earlier, Gar-Field slipped past Woodbridge's slow-down tactics, 45-43, and Osbourn Park, 95-90. Vince Garrett had 32 points against Osbourn Park. Kenny Scroggins and Alvarez added 24 and 22, respectively.
Gar-Field and Potomac advanced to this week's Northwestern Region Tournament. The Indians received a bye to tonight's semifinal game against Heritage High School, the winner of the Western District.
The girls championship was also a repeat of the district playoff title game. Woodbridge clipped Gar-Field, 50-37, after eding the Indians, 42-40, a week before to take the regular season crown. Woodbridge held Gar-Field to 10 first-half points and coasted to the victory in the tournament winner.
Tiffany Smith led the Vikings balanced attack with 12 points. Rebecca Wakefield added 11 and Rose Bell 10.
Northwestern District: Loudoun Valley (20-3) captured the Northwestern District tournament with victories over Broad Run (79-60) and Park View (58-41). Tournament MVP Chris Leonard scored 25 points against Park View and 36 in the final versus Broad Run, including 12 of 12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Broad Run had little luck, falling behind 17-1 at the start and never pulling closer than nine points.
