Family Friend Needed

The Family Friends Project needs volunteers, 55 or older, to spend several hours each week with families who have children with chronic illnesses or disabilities.

Volunteers are asked to spend time enriching the lives of these children by reading and playing creatively with them, and offering themselves as friends to the families.

Volunteers are reimbursed for transportation costs and other personal expenses related to visits.For information, call 635-5949. Historic Site Seeks Help

Dranesville Tavern Historic Site, a restored 19th-century historic facility operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority's Division of Historic Preservation, needs volunteers for education programs this summer and fall. The Dranesville Tavern Museum Education Program gives children the opportunity to experience life in Leesburg by combining historic facts with hands-on activities. A special daytime training session is being offered for people interested in becoming volunteer listeners for Northern Virginia Hotline, a 24-hour confidential listening, referral and crisis intervention telephone service. Alexandria's Meals on Wheels program needs more volunteers to serve its clients, elderly and disabled people who have difficulty buying and preparing meals. Volunteers can help in two ways: packing the daily hot meals and cold bag lunches from 8:45 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday at the Alexandria Hospital kitchen or helping deliver them from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers can serve only one day a month or do more if their time permits. The Vale United Methodist Church will hold its Annual Spring Yard Sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the church lawn at the corner of Fox Mill and Vale roads in Oakton. An auction of special items and services will start at 1 p.m. Also featured will be a bake sale and a bird house boutique -- a sale of one-of-a-kind homes for birds.
