Stop Moths With Burlap
Fairfax County property owners who want to help prevent gypsy moth damage this season can go by one of the county governmental centers to pick up burlap bands to put around the trunks of their trees. Banding trees in burlap creates a convenient shelter or hiding place for caterpillars as they travel down the tree. This shelter is handy to the person tending the trees, making the removal of caterpillars easier. Caterpillars removed by hand can be destroyed by placing them in a container of soapy water. Trees most affected by gypsy moths are oak, beech, apple and birch. For further information, call 246-5326, TDD 273-9025.
