TOWN OF RIVERDALE

The Riverdale Town Council voted July 2 to support a decision by the Maryland National Park and Planning Commission denying a McDonald's Corp. request to renovate its restaurant at the corner of Kenilworth Avenue and Riverdale Road.

The Town Council agreed with the commission's opinion that the restaurant's proposed design was not compatible with the design of other restaurants in the same area. The council specifically said the restaurant chain's trademark yellow arches would be too high compared with neighboring signs.

Renovation of the Riverdale train station has been completed, B & O Railroad officials told council members July 2. B &O's MARC commuter rail trains, which transport commuters daily from Baltimore and Western Maryland into Washington, make eight daily stops in Riverdale at the Queensbury Road and Rhode Island Avenue station.

The improvements include a new paint job and installing a wooden platform and a handicap access ramp. Commuters now wait on a grassy lawn for trains.

In other business, the council agreed to place "no parking and stopping" signs along 54th Avenue to help combat increased drug activity in that area.
