Cultural Awards

The Cultural Arts Committee of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the ALEX awards. The awards are given in recognition of contributions by Alexandria's cultural arts organizations to the city. Anyone in the civic or business community may submit nominations in one of four categories: performing artist or organization, visual artist or organization, small businessperson or business organization, and businessperson or business organization that has given outstanding support to the cultural arts in Alexandria. Falls Church Photo Contest

Amateur photographers are invited to enter their color photographs of Falls Church people, places or events to the "Spirit of Falls Church" photo contest. The top 12 photos will be printed in the Falls Church annual report and calendar. All works will be exhibited in the City Art Gallery. Each entry should measure 10 inches by 8 inches in a horizontal format and be matted or framed. Photos must be submitted by Aug. 24. Call 241-5004.

Woodmont Weavers at Fair

The Woodmont Weavers are setting up shop at the Arlington County Fair today through Sunday. Handwoven tote bags, placemats, clothing and stuffed animals will be on sale at the fair in the Jefferson Community Center, 3501 S. Second St., Arlington. All weaving is done by weavers from the Woodmont Center for developmentally disabled adults. Call 358-6343.

Arts Festival in Manassas

The Prince William County Cultural Arts Federation is sponsoring the "Centerfest 2" arts festival on Aug. 25 and 26. The festival will feature outdoor fine arts, craft shows, refreshments and entertainment at the Courthouse Arts Center in Manassas. Call (703) 369-6047.

Nature Slide Show

The best slides from the "Nature Photography '90 Contest" will be screened in a free presentation at the Hidden Pond Nature Center, 8511 Greeley Blvd., Springfield. The 15-minute multimedia program will be shown from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 25 and 26. Call 451-9588.

Senior Artists Exhibit Works

The Alexandria Commission and the Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center are sponsoring "Young at Art," a juried exhibition by artists ages 60 to 85. The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Target Gallery of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105 N. Union St., Alexandria. Call 683-0693.

Artist Displays Glass

"Architectural Art Glass," an exhibition of pieces by artist Ellen Kardell, is displayed through Sept. 15 at Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers, 601 S. Washington St., Alexandria. Kardell has created art glass for the Smithsonian Institution, churches, businesses and homes throughout the East Coast. A reception to meet the artist will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the exhibition. Call 548-3447.

Historical Paintings

Period-costumed guides will interpret the exhibit of "Loudoun Art," opening Saturday and continuing through Aug. 26. A historical collection of oil-painted portraits of prominent Loudoun County political and business leaders will be displayed in the courthouse in Leesburg.
