NEW SCHOOL HOURS -- The School Board received a staff report outlining new school day hours for the county's four high schools and a number of middle and elementary schools.

The high school day will be 12 to 18 minutes longer this coming school year because of a switch from a six to a seven-class day at those schools. The change affects some middle and elementary schools that synchronize their bus schedules with high school bus schedules.

Each high school day will begin at 8:40 a.m. and end at 3:20 p.m. Last year, the high schools opened at varying times, between 8:52 and 8:58 a.m. and closed at 3:20 p.m.

The middle and elementary schools will follow varying schedules which differ from this last school year's schedules by 5 to 20 minutes. Last year elementary and middle schools opened at varying times between 8:15 and 8:55 a.m. and closed between 2:40 and 3:20 p.m. This year's school day schedules start earlier in the day. Elementary and middle school students will begin school between 8 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. and end their day between 2:25 and 3:20 p.m.

The county's schools are grouped into four clusters, each including a high school, a middle school and surrounding elementary schools.

In the Park View High School cluster, the schedule for Sterling Middle School will stay at 8:10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m., the same as last year, while the four elementary schools -- Rolling Ridge, Sully, Sterling and Guilford -- will open at 8 a.m. and close at 2:25 p.m. Last year those schools opened at 8:20 a.m. and closed at 2:45 p.m.
