The Laurel City Council at its Aug. 27 meeting voted to annex 33 acres of city-owned land outside the corporate limits on the southeastern side of Laurel-Fort Meade Road and the southwestern side of the Patuxent River. The parcels of land include the former Laurel landfill and a portion of Maryland Route 198.
The council plans to rezone the properties for open space and lease them to a private developer who has tentative plans to build a miniature golf course, a driving range and a softball field.
On the issue of tax credits, Council President Stephen Turney testified before the Maryland Municipal League's legislative committee on Aug. 18 in support of statewide legislation allowing local governments to give tax credits to owners of multi-family rental units who rent at least 10 percent of their property to senior citizens or single-family units when the home is shared with a senior citizen.
Turney proposed the legislation to address the severe shortage of available, moderate-priced rental housing for senior citizens. Laurel's director of finance, J. O'Dell, said it is too early to determine how much the proposed tax credit might be or its fiscal impact on the city.
The legislative committee plans to study the bill for inclusion in its legislative package to be forwarded to the General Assembly this fall. CITY OF SEAT PLEASANT
