The following items were discussed by the Alexandria School Board at its Sept. 6 meeting. For further information, call 824-6635.
GEORGE MASON TASK FORCE REPORT -- The board received an interim report of a George Mason Elementary ad hoc task force recommending that school officials keep parents better informed and work to increase parent involvement in school activities.
The task force, formed last spring after parents complained of discipline and curriculum problems at the school, also criticized Principal Felicia Lanhan Tarason, who was hired last year. Board Chairman Melvin A. Miller said the board would look into the criticism.
REDISTRICTING GOALS -- The board discussed proposals to redraw elementary school boundary lines and create middle schools that would include sixth graders, who are now in elementary schools. Several parents expressed concern that redistricting would force their children into new schools. The board is scheduled to vote at its Sept. 27 meeting on the goals of redistricting.
BOARD RETREAT -- The board voted 6 to 3 to hold a 1 1/2-day retreat at a Fredericksburg hotel in early October to discuss redistricting, the school budget and other education issues. Board members voting against the out-of-town trip said it wasn't appropriate to spend money on a retreat in the present fiscally austere times.
