An unidentified man was shot to death early today in a homeless shelter in Northeast Washington by a man who apparently entered the building and sought out the victim, police said. A suspect was arrested nearby after a brief chase.

Police said the slain man was shot about 1 a.m. in the men's dormitory of the Matthew G. Emery shelter in the 1700 block of Lincoln Road NE. He was dead at the scene.

Officers responding to the shooting spotted a man fitting the description of a suspect, and chased him to the unit block of Seaton Place NE, where he was arrested.

No other details of the killing were immediately available.

Meanwhile, police yesterday identified a woman who was shot and killed while sitting in a car outside her house in the 800 block of T Street NW as Mildred Johns, 35.

Johns was shot along with a man whose identity and whereabouts were not released because he is a witness, police said. The man was reported to be hospitalized and in stable condition. Police said they had no motive or suspects.

In an unrelated case, a woman who police said suffered severe chest injuries a month ago died Wednesday at D.C. General Hospital. Joan Williams, 36, was injured during a dispute in front of her house in the 2600 block of Pomeroy Road SE.

It was not clear what the nature of the injuries were. Police, who said they had no suspects, said Williams was taken to the hospital by ambulance Tuesday.
