Approximately 1,500 semifinalists have been named by the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students. Selections were based on scores on the 1989 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 90,000 black students entered the competition.
