Four Gaithersburg women are organizing a drive to send Christmas stockings to U.S. soldiers stationed in the Middle East. Organizers are asking residents to donate money to be used toward postage for the stockings as well as such stocking stuffers as envelopes, pads of paper, pens, disposable razors, talcum powder, tooth paste and tooth brushes, candy canes, chewing gum, powdered drink packs, hard candy, batteries and other small gifts.

The items should be delivered to the second-floor reception area of Gaithersburg City Hall, 31. Summit Ave. S.

Checks or money orders to be used toward postage should be made payable to Operation Christmas and sent to Operation Chistmas Desert Shield, General Delivery, Gaithersburg, Md. 20877.


The city is once again seeking donations of food, money, clothing and toys for low-income families during the upcoming holiday season.

Last year, the drive assisted 1,515 city families.

City officials coordinating the drive request donations of nonperishable food, new toys and clothing that is either new or in good condition.

Those wishing to donate money should make checks payable to Rockville Holiday Fund and mail them to the Department of Community Serivces, Rockville City Hall, Maryland Avenue at Vinson Street, Rockville, 20850. The contributions are tax deductible.

Other donations should be delivered to the Department of Community Services at City Hall, the Lincoln Park Community Center, 357 Frederick Ave., or to the Rockville Senior Center, 1150 Carnation Dr. Hours of collection are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. On weekends and after 5 p.m. weekdays, donations may be delivered to the Rockivlle Police Department at the rear of City Hall.

Those unable to drop off donations of food can call City Hall to make arrangement for pickup.
