The preliminary phase of the Ella L. Poindexter Memorial Student Scholarship Competition, sponsored by the Prince William Symphony Orchestra, is slated for Dec. 15. The first-place winner in the contest will perform with the symphony during the next concert year. First-, second- and third-place winners also will receive $500, $250 and $100 respectively. A juried panel will select the finalists from participants performing Dec. 15. The finalists will appear Jan. 13 in a recital where the winner will be chosen. Red Cross Offers Classes
The Prince William Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering a variety of classes this month. An infant and child CPR class will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Piedmont Federal in Manassas. The fee is $20. A standard first-aid instructor class will be offered from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Botts Fire Station in Woodbridge for $25. A community CPR class will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 17 at Tall Oaks Community Center in Lake Ridge, also for $25. Church Pancake Breakfast
Buckhall United Methodist Church will sponsor its first pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Manassas. The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children under 12. For information, call 368-5113.
Swimmers Wanted for Club
The Prince William Swim Club Inc. (Amberjax) is still accepting applications for new swimmers for its year-round program, including activities for children ages 4 through 18. Family discounts are available. A $15 non-refundable tryout fee is required, and all practices will be at the Dale City Recreation Center. Cub Scout Food Drive
Cub Scout Pack 35 will collect food for the needy this month, beginning with deliveries of plastic bags Saturday to Montclair and surrounding residences. The bags will be picked up the following Saturday, Nov. 17. Only nonperishable foods, such as dry or canned goods, are sought. People participating in the food drive are asked to have their bagged contributions ready for pickup by 9:30 a.m.
Manassas Christmas Parade
Plans are being made for the 45th Annual Greater Manassas Christmas Parade on Dec. 1. The theme of the parade is "A Fantasy Christmas." Anyone wishing to enter a unit in the parade must call 368-7925 and request an application. All applications must be returned to the parade committee by Nov. 15.
