State's Top Teacher

Rosemarie McConnaughey has been chosen Maryland Teacher of the Year by the state Department of Education and the Maryland Chamber Foundation Inc. McConnaughey, who teaches fifth grade at Columbia Park Elementary School in Landover, was selected from a field of 21 nominees and four semifinalists. She is the first teacher from Prince George's County public schools to win the distinction.

McConnaughey, a Laurel resident, will be considered in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

1990's Top Travel Person

Pete Chambliss, of Crownsville, recently was named 1990 Travel Person of the Year by the Maryland Tourism Council. The announcement was made at the annual Governor's Conference on Tourism, which was held recently at Wisp resort in Garrett County.

Chambliss was chosen for his leadership, support and volunteer work in the Maryland tourism industry during the past 20 years in promoting the state. Chambliss is the 11th person to receive the honor.

Chambliss promotes Maryland worldwide in his position as chief of tourism marketing in the state Office of Tourism Development.

Top Citizen, Part I

Odenton resident Robert Sanner Sr. has been named the Citizen of the Year by the Greater Odenton Improvement Association.

The award was presented at a ceremony this month in St. Joseph's Church Hall by Del. Marsha Perry, of Crofton, who said, "Volunteers are the true lifeblood of the community."

Sanner, a 53-year resident of Odenton, was chosen for his volunteer service. Sanner is a member of the Odenton association, Odenton Kiwanis and Odenton Masonic Lodge.

Top Citizen, Part II

The Germantown Chamber of Commerce has named Leon L. Lunden 1990 Citizen of the Year and the Germantown Branch of the Montgomery County Public Library as the Business of the Year.

Lunden is a retired certified public accountant and eight-year Germantown resident.
