Seven people were killed in the District between Saturday evening and early yesterday, police said, pushing the city's homicide total for the year so far to 431 -- just seven fewer than were recorded in all of 1989.
There were 394 homicides in the District at the same time last year.
The victims of the weekend's violence included a Northeast Washington woman whose husband was charged in the killing and a Silver Spring man who was slain after a traffic accident in upper Northwest.
Police said Mary Smith, 50, of the 1600 block of D Street NE, was shot to death about 5:30 a.m. in her house. Her husband, Melvin Smith, 46, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, officers said.
Neighbors of the Smiths were surprised to hear of the shooting, which police said occurred during an argument. Residents said the Smiths had lived on the quiet block at least seven years.
"They were so well-respected," said one, who asked not to be identified. "He would do small repairs in my home, and they were very supportive. They were always helping somebody out."
The other killings occurred between 7:20 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 a.m. yesterday.
In the 3:30 a.m. homicide, a Suitland man was found wounded in a car after a shooting in the 2700 block of Georgia Avenue NW, police said.
The man, Darryl Waldrop, of the 3800 block of St. Barnabas Street, was taken to Washington Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police found 55 shell casings at the scene of the shooting.
A traffic accident about 1:55 a.m. yesterday apparently led to the shooting death of Sameer Bhatt, of the 8600 block of 16th Street in Silver Spring, police said.
Bhatt's car and another were involved in an accident at Georgia and Arkansas avenues NW, according to police, and he and the occupants of the other vehicle began arguing. Bhatt was shot and died at the scene, police said.
Few details were available on the weekend's other homicides.
Angela White, of the 1800 block of H Place NE, was found shot in the 1900 block of H Street NE about 11:25 p.m. Saturday, police said. White, whose age was not available, was taken to D.C. General Hospital, where she died at 11:54 p.m., police said.
A 26-year-old man, Leonard Phelps, was shot in the chest in an apartment building in the 200 block of V Street NW about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, police said. Phelps, of the 700 block of Park Road NW, was taken to Howard University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:17 p.m., police said.
And two unidentified men were shot to death at the Potomac Gardens housing complex in the 1200 block of I Street NE about 7:20 p.m. Saturday, police said.
Except for the Smith case, police had no suspects in the killings.
