As part of an effort to make legal services available to everyone, the Young Lawyers Conference of the Virginia State Bar is sponsoring a "No Bills Night" of free legal advice by phone from 6 to 9 tonight.

About 30 lawyers from area law firms will be available each hour for 10-minute consultations. The lawyers, who are volunteering their time, will accept questions on any legal-oriented matter.

The counselors will attempt to identify specific legal problems and help callers find available services to help them.

Although the volunteers will not attempt to solve the problems or offer specific advice, they will determine if a person does have a legal problem and if it can be solved without outside help, or they will refer callers to local government agencies, legal aid services and other local resources.

Last year, more than 250 callers were served.

Previous questions have related to such topics as tenants and landlords, property, criminal law, consumer credit, bankruptcy, and wills and trusts.

The donation of about 90 total lawyer hours will provide about $9,000 in free services, according to Shireen Drummond, a lawyer with the Tysons Corner firm Rees, Broome & Diaz, P.C., where the phone service will be based.

For a consultation, call 790-1911.
