AIRBUS INDUSTRIE -- The board approved a special exception to allow Airbus Industrie of North America, the American division of the world's second-largest producer of commercial aircraft, to build a flight training center and an office building on 19 acres in Ashburn.

The office building will house Airbus Industrie's North American headquarters, now located in Herndon. The flight training complex will consist of several kinds of flight simulators, offices and classrooms, and will be used to train cockpit, cabin, ground and maintenance crews.

The Airbus complex, to be located in the Beaumeade Corporate Park, about two miles from Dulles International Airport, will be constructed in three phases. The first phase will be a 71,000-square-foot office building that will house a spare-parts distribution center. The company received approval for that building at an earlier date. The second phase will be the flight training center and the third phase will be the 60,000-square-foot office building that will be the North American headquarters.

Airbus Industrie is a European commercial aircraft consortium based in Toulouse, France. By locating its American headquarters in Loudoun County, it joins other aircraft companies such as British Aerospace Inc. and UAL Corp., which also have branches within a few miles of the airport.
