Three-term council member Edward F. Sharp is favored next week to win enough votes from his colleagues to replace Stephen J. Del Giudice as mayor of Takoma Park.
Sharp, council member Marc Elrich, city election judge Verne Wilson and Avis L. Sanders, formerly an activist in the city's sanctuary movement, have all expressed interest in finishing out the remaining year of Del Giudice's term. Del Giudice vacated the mayor's post Tuesday when he was sworn in as a member of the Prince George's County Council.
The appointment is to be made at the next council meeting, at 8 p.m. Monday at the Muncipal Building, 7500 Maple Ave. Council members have said they expect to select the next mayor from their ranks. If a council member is chosen mayor, then the council will later appoint a replacement for the council member.
Sharp, 41, appears Del Giudice's likely successor, since as he has gained early support from the majority of the seven-member council. No council members have publicly pledged support for Elrich.

Sharp, who writes grant regulations at the Department of Energy and who, like Del Giudice, lives resides on in the city's Prince George's County portion of Takoma Park, has said that as mayor he would work for a review of the tax rebate system between Montgomery County and the city. Elrich, 41, also supports a change in the system, which both council members say shortchanges the city.
Sharp currently serves as mayor pro-tem of the council, presiding over meetings not attended by the mayor.
