Giant Food Inc. yesterday said it is recalling a wide range of Giant brand bread after the discovery of "fine, sandlike particles" in some of it.

Giant executives declined to explain how the particles got into the bread, which the Landover-based supermarket chain makes along with ice cream and other products. Virtually every variety of bread produced by Giant was affected, but Giant officials would not say which of its more than 150 area stores had carried the contaminated product.

Even before the announcement of the recall, many Giant Food stores in the area had begun removing the bread from their shelves after customer complaints.

Giant said in a statement that packaged breads whose plastic closures read "THU," "FRI" or "SAT" were being withdrawn from sale.

The varieties being recalled are:

No Salt Added White, No Salt Added Wheat, No Salt Added Raisin, White-Light-Reduced Calorie, Wheat-Light-Reduced Calorie, Butter Added White, White Enriched, Honey Wheat, Sandwich, Sandwich Honey Wheat, Cracked Wheat, Buttermilk, Oat Bran, Raisin, Hot Dog Rolls (8 and 12 count), Hot Dog Rolls with Sesame Seeds, King-Size Hot Dog Rolls, Hamburger Rolls (8 and 12 count), Wheat Hamburger Rolls, Potato Rolls, Dinner Party Rolls, Sesame Sandwich Rolls, Plain Twist Rolls and Poppyseed Twist.

The supermarket said customers who purchased the breads should return them to stores for a full refund.
