Rayful Edmond Jr., the father of convicted drug kingpin Rayful Edmond III, was arrested in Southwest Washington yesterday evening and charged with distribution of crack cocaine, D.C. police said last night.

A police investigator said that Edmond had no cocaine in his possession when he was arrested at 6:45 p.m. near Fourth and I streets SW, but that he had earlier sold two kilos of crack to undercover officers -- one in November and one earlier in the fall.

Last night's arrest, part of a joint D.C. police-FBI investigation, came a year and two weeks after Rayful Edmund III was convicted of eight drug and conspiracy charges by the District's first-ever anonymous jury. He later was sentenced to life in prison.

"We've been looking at {Edmond Jr.} since way back when we were looking at {Edmond III}," the investigator said. "But there wasn't enough to take papa down back then. He just sort of slipped through the cracks."

Affidavits filed last year in support of the arrest warrant issued for Edmond III alleged that Edmond Jr. helped his son obtain cocaine in New York in the mid-1980s, marking the younger Edmond's entry into the drug trade.
