Ping Lin, of Greenbelt, will be among more than a dozen area high school students to attend the weeklong 1991 National Young Leaders Conference next week in the District. Ping, a senior at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, will be among 350 high school students from the United States who will meet with members of Congress, attend panel discussions and government forums and participate in a mock congressional debate.
Skating Championships Nilam Sanghvi, an eighth-grader at Stone Ridge Country Day School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, will compete in the 1991 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships to be held Feb. 10-17 in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Sanghvi and her partner, Benjamin Swang, qualified for the nationals by placing fourth in the novice dance event at the Midwestern sectional championships held in Omaha this month.
Scholarship Winner Justin Bekelman, of Walt Whitman High School, has been named a local winner of the Shell Century Three Leaders $1,500 college scholarship award. Bekelman, president of the Student Government Association and a member of the Spanish Honor Society, is a peer counselor at the school. As a scholarship winner, he will travel to the Shell Century Three Leaders national conference at colonial Williamsburg, where students from across the country will compete for a $10,000 award.
The program recognizes seniors who demonstrate leadership ability. Winners are selected based on school and community involvement, academic success and awareness of current events. They also must prepare a "Projection for Innovative Leadership" offering a solution to a critical issue affecting the nation's future.
Quartet to Compete The Leisure Time Grandads, a barbershop quartet from the Bowie Chapter of Barbershop Harmony Singers, will compete with 19 other quartets from across the United States in Tampa on Saturday. Quartet members Jim Bush, 64, Lou Lichtenberger, 63, Bill Ilsley, 61, and Herman Arvin, 60, are all retired and founded the group in 1989. To be eligible to compete in the Seniors Quartet, the ages of the members must total at least 240 years.
