A Northwest Washington great-grandfather was shot in the face and seriously wounded last night in an unexplained attack by someone loitering on his porch, D.C. police said.

George Boone, 76, a retired Giant Food employee, was shot in the left eye shortly after 8 p.m. at his house in the 4600 block of Eighth Street NW, authorities said.

Police said they knew of no motive.

Boone's wife of 50 years, Hattie Boone, 73, said she answered a knock on the front door of her row house, peered out the glass door, which is covered by blinds, and saw two men she didn't recognize.

One asked for the name of someone she didn't know, she said.

"I said that person didn't live here" and returned to watching television, she added.

Moments later, her husband heard sounds coming from the front porch and went toward the door, but didn't open it, Boone said.

"I heard a 'pow!' Then he fell," Boone said. "He hit the floor, and I screamed."

The two men fled, she said.

The shot left a hole in one of the glass door panes.

Boone said that she and her husband have lived at the Eighth Street address for more than 20 years and never had any problems there.

Boone said she didn't recall the name that the man on the porch asked for.

The victim ws taken to Washington Hospital Center.
